First John Elway Cover White Pages Brilliant gridiron “Field General” John Elway goes “Bombs Away!” as noted on the front cover of Sports Illustrated magazine Vol 57, #20. Dated 11/8/82, this somewhat scarce issue is reported as the 70th hardest to locate of SI’s considerable publication run. Pictured as a Stanford senior, Elway made his first SI cover appearance with this captivating action shot. CGC has rated this copy (8.0), good for a Census ranking of “1/1” at this level, with only one higher. The grading label includes the notations “v57, #20; White Pages; 1s Elway cover, Stanford vs. Washington”.
