The Science of Grading
Understanding why third-party authentication is the cornerstone of the multi-billion dollar vintage collectibles market.
What is Professional Grading?
Professional card grading is the unbiased third-party assessment of a collectible's authenticity and physical condition. Certified experts from firms like PSA, SGC, and CGC evaluate cards for alteration, tampering, and wear, assigning a definitive numeric grade from 1 to 10 that dictates market value.

Grade Before You Sell Pre-War
Cards manufactured before 1945 — T206 tobacco, 1933 Goudey, 1941 Play Ball — almost always increase in value when graded by PSA or SGC. The authentication premium on pre-war material typically exceeds grading costs by 3–5x for EX or better examples.
Skip Grading Junk Wax Era
Cards from 1986–1992 were massively overproduced. Grading fees will often exceed the final graded card value. Save your money. The exception: key rookies (Ken Griffey Jr., Derek Jeter) in gem mint condition can justify the cost.
SGC vs PSA — Which Grader?
PSA dominates registry sets and carries higher liquidity for baseball cards. SGC has grown preferred among vintage collectors for tighter grading standards and iconic tuxedo holders. For T206 and pre-1960 material, SGC grades increasingly command premiums.
