Extraordinary panoramic team photo of the 1905 World Champion New York Giants taken by noted Chicago football photographer George Lawrence. This is the first example of this panoramic photo we have ever seen, but if it seems familiar, it is for good reason. This very image was featured on the cover of the New York Giants’ 1905 World Series program! The photograph captures twenty members of the New York Giants, each nattily dressed in formal attire, as they pose in a studio setting. Included here are manager John McGraw, Christy Mathewson, Roger Bresnahan, Joe McGinnity, “Dummy” Taylor, Hooks Wiltse, Mike Donlin, and George Browne. The photo displays remarkable clarity and contrast for a photo of this size, which is not surprising since it was produced by noted Chicago photographer George Lawrence, whose credit and copyright date (1905) appear in the lower-right corner. As noted earlier, this is the first original example of this photograph that we have ever seen in any size, let alone one measuring 24.25 x 18.5 inches. The piece remains affixed to its original cardboard mount (27 x 21-inches). The size of this photo; however, which is actually small for Lawrence, should come as no surprise to those familiar with his work. In 1901 Lawrence produced the then largest photograph in history with his 8-foot by 4.5-foot photo of the Alton Limited, described at the time as the “Handsomest Train in the World.” That photo later earned Lawrence the award of “Grand Prize of the World for Photographic Excellence” at the European Exposition. One of the most innovative and successful commercial photographers of his era, Lawrence delighted in producing awe-inspiring images of grand size, a fact duly noted in his business slogan that read “The Hitherto Impossible in Photography is Our Specialty.” He was also a pioneer in the field of aerial photography, often using kites and balloons, known as his “airships,” to suspend his camera hundreds of feet above the ground in order to produce photos of unprecedented scale. Lawrence produced a number of memorable football photos over the years, many of which captured World Series action in his hometown of Chicago. The offered piece is obviously one of his finest works. Given the size and quality of this photo, not to mention the expense to produce it at the time, it is almost certain that they were produced only for team members and executives. That limited distribution would explain its rarity today. Both the photo and mount display a few light water stains, with the mount also exhibiting a few small edge tears. A slightly larger tear to the mount along the top border has been repaired with clear tape on the reverse. Despite the flaws, many of which along the mount can easily be matted out, the photo projects an overall Excellent appearance. This is a remarkable and rare football image, and one that would be among the highlights of any advanced football-photography collection. We sell cards a wide variety of sports cards ranging up to millions of dollars .
